The University of Montevallo hosts first film festival

Film students from the University of Montevallo had their moment in the spotlight when they won the top prizes at the school’s first film festival, Scene on the Bricks.


The festival was a chance for students and local filmmakers to show off the best of their creative efforts on the big screen and compete for prizes. With over 1000 submissions, 31 short films screened across three categories: high school, collegiate and independent films.

Students are suing the University of Alabama after leaders decided to shutter two student publications last year over DEI concerns.

Jefferson County man arrested, charged with cable theft

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A Jefferson County man was arrested and charged with theft of AT&T cable, following an encounter with a detective.


On March 13, detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a possible AT&T cable theft in 1400 block of Warrior Jasper Rd.

Bryan Dawson apologizes to the University of Montevallo after hosting postponed event

Following the Feb. 12 postponement, the University of Montevallo hosted Turning Point USA’s “Pick Up the Mic” event, featuring guest speaker Bryan Dawson, on March 5.


The original Feb 12. date was postponed by the university due to security concerns, following a threat on Dawson’s life. Measures taken to ensure campus security included closing off roads, increased local and federal law enforcement presence and a sniper placed on a nearby academic building.
